A dog sleeps 12 to 14 hours a day, and a cat sometimes more than 15. In other words, their bed is where they spend most of their time! Choosing it well means giving them a real retreat, and saves you from always finding them on the couch. Here's what to check before you buy.
1. The right size
Measure your pet while they're lying down asleep, from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail, then add 6 to 8 inches (15 to 20 cm). A bed that's too small forces them to curl up tight; one that's too big can make them feel less secure, especially cats and small dogs who like to feel snug.
2. Watch how they sleep
- Curls up in a ball? Go for a round bed with raised edges, or a cozy cave: they can rest their head and feel protected.
- Stretches out full length? A flat, rectangular cushion or mattress will suit them better.
- Loves to hide? Caves and enclosed houses are perfect, especially for cats.
3. The material
Velvet and plush are very soft and warm, ideal in winter. Felted wool is naturally temperature-regulating: warm in winter, pleasant in summer. Cotton and wicker are breathable. For an older dog or one with joint problems, a memory foam cushion relieves pressure points.
4. Easy care
Hair, mud, little critters… a bed gets dirty fast. Choose one with a removable, machine-washable cover, or a waterproof lining if your dog often comes back wet from walks.
5. The right spot
Place the bed in a quiet but not isolated corner, away from drafts and overly hot radiators. Your pet likes to keep an eye on household life while still being able to rest in peace.
