An indoor cat lives safely, but can quickly get bored. And a bored cat nibbles, scratches the furniture, meows at night or puts on weight. The good news: a few simple changes are enough to enrich their daily life and satisfy their natural instincts.
1. Give them height
Cats love to watch over their territory from above. A cat tree, wall shelves or wall-mounted steps create a real vertical playground. Bonus: it's a great way to multiply their space without taking up floor area.
2. Provide things to scratch
Scratching isn't a whim: it's a need, to keep their claws in shape and mark their territory. Offer several scratchers, vertical and horizontal, in sisal or cardboard, near their resting spots. Your couch will thank you.
3. Play with them every day
Two or three short 10-minute sessions a day make a big difference. Feather wands and toys that mimic prey trigger their hunting instinct. Always end the session by letting them "catch" their prey, so they stay satisfied.
4. Rotate the toys
Cats quickly get bored of a toy left on the floor all the time. Rotate their toys every week: balls, mice, catnip toys, interactive balls that move on their own… They'll feel like they're discovering new ones.
5. Create hiding spots
A cave, a tent or a simple cardboard box gives them a refuge to recharge and watch without being seen. It's essential for their balance, especially in a busy household.
